Name… the 3 States of Water!

familyfeudmoney

“And weeeeellcome to Family Feud!”

“We have surveyed 500 Malaysians and the top 3 answers are on the board. Name a typical Malaysian’s biggest money worry!”

“Retirement funds!”    “And the survey says….”    *Buuuuuuu~!*
“Fall in stock prices!”    *Buuuuuuuu~!*
“Bank getting robbed!”    *Buuuuuuu~!*
“Dropping my wallet on the streets!”    *Buuuuuuuu~*
“Not getting the right change from the shopkeeper!”    *Buuuuuuu~*
“The inability to buy my favourite LV bag!”    *Buuuuuu… wait, that’s kinda correct, but judges say it’s not accurate enough, sorry*

“Oh my goodness, this is so hard. What could the answer be?!”

Seriously, Mr. Visa, do we really need a survey for this? No, more importantly, does this even qualify as news? Moreover, at the very top of the home page?

The Star Article – Malaysians’ biggest money worries: Cost of living, salary and debt

Did a little photoshop tribute to Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu’s opening sequence, thought the art stills were inspiring. Wanted to outline my hair like below but got too lazy :P

How I Judge Animation and Films

thismovierockshellyeah

My cousin Daim wrote a nice piece of article in his *ahem* BLOG (http://www.daimation.com) detailing his preferences in selecting his favourite animation/movies. Had a nice discussion with my cousins last night, thought it was a great idea to come up with my own list! :) I invite everyone to do the same!

This is also in tune with the upcoming ahbonk.net Anime Awards 2009, so you will roughly know why I choose some shows over others.

Of course, this is just a writeup about my preferences. To each his own, I’d say.

First, let me tell you the most important factor in choosing the right show:

  • As long as it’s not Micheal Bay’s Transformers, it’s good.

Wait, come back! It’s not the only factor…

Hidamari Sketch Deserves 3 Stars out of 3

hs365-faces

Honestly, I thought winter is gonna be full of panty shots and fanservice galore (watched Ladies x Butler and Chu-bra first :S) with a microscopic amaeba they call a story. If it turns out to be like comedy king Sora no Otoshimono then I’m all for it. Here to save the season is the third season of slife-of-life goodness, Hidamari Sketch Hoshimittsu (that’s “3 stars” in English). Thank goodness.

I was very impressed with the first episode. Storytelling and comedy value are *still* entertaining on top of the no-need-for-improvement-but-still-improved animation and beautiful art style. I’m one happy anime fan. I love you Shaft.

If the third season goes well, it’ll be my number 5 best anime of all time.

So far (still more shows to go this month), I recommend for your winter viewing pleasure:

  • Dance in the Vampire Bund: From the first episode of this show, you already know that Shaft doesn’t like to follow things by the book. You’d appreciate it more if you watch a lot of Japanese TV coz it’s a parody of it. Won’t spoil much but I’m amazed at its life-likeness.
  • Ookamikakushi: I like the mystery part of Higurashi (innocent town with dark secrets), so this is right up my alley.
  • Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu: Using school test results to summon beings? Now that’s something! An instant comedy hit for me. Not to mention it’s from a bestselling light novel, AND Silver Link did a great, no, superb job at animating it. Surprisingly high production value.
  • EDIT: Just watched Durarara. Another recommendation, same studio and director as Baccano. Baccano had an interesting cast of characters that captured your attention upon first glance, which unfortunately Durarara doesn’t have. We’ll have to see how things go.

K-on second seas… I mean, Sora no Woto was nice, but still didn’t manage to pull me in just yet. Especially with the K-on character clones. Seriously, out of character design ideas?

Am waiting for Nodame Cantabile Finale, Hanamaru Youchien and Katanagatari.

Ok truth is, I’m just writing this post as an excuse to tell everyone how awesome Hidamari Sketch is :3 Yes I’m crazy for pastel colours and long oval heads.

Happy New Year 2010!

touhou2010

A little late, but happy new year everyone! あけおめ!Spent New Year’s with my cousins in several eatery spots, everyone wasn’t in the mood to go to a crowded place for some countdown. After that day, I had to prepare for job hunting, was invited to a Japanese otaku friend’s house for a night’s stay, all in all it’s been a pretty busy but fun week.

Anyway, last year was quite the blast. 2009 marked an important year for me coz I spent the entire year living in Japan. Full of ups and downs, but no doubt a life-changing experience.

Now what will 2010 bring? It’s all up to me, of course :) Let’s recap what my new year resolution was in 2009…

serious2009

Though I didn’t get up to par on my drawing skills *sob* but I think I worked really hard on my Japanese skills. I can’t believe I was not able to read much Kanji up till last year. Still a mystery to me how I passed JLPT Level 3 few years back. Being in Japan really does help a lot. A LOT.

Sure I’ve gotten better and all, but it was quite a tiring year for me as well. I think “stress” is a great word to sum up the entire year. Not to mention that I’ve gone through a bitter moment back in April if you remember. I ended up caring too much about everything, became envious of other people’s skills, had little confidence in speaking Japanese with others, irritated at the smallest mistakes I made, cared too much about how others think about me, was too cautious on expressing my interests, bla bla.

Enough of this nonsense, I say! Here’s my new year’s resolution for 2010:

nonki

The word is nonki, or easygoing/carefree. Heck, didn’t even bother to write it in Kanji but I decorated it with beautiful autumn leaves :) No concept whatsoever, I just love autumn leaves!

2010 is the year to return to my happy-go-lucky self again! What, my Japanese sucks? Bored of my anime talk? Don’t like my opinions? Well, screw you hahaha! I don’t care! It’s time to get my life back on track, do what I like and live in the now. Hopefully by the end of 2010 I won’t be too self-conscious about the tiniest details and be a much happier person.

Whatever it is you’re set on doing in 2010, all the best! I hope for your continuing support in 2010 as well. 今年もよろしく!

The trip to my friend’s house and a certain anime award in the next few days. Stay tuned!

New Joint Collabo Hidamari Sketch MAD

What do you get when you cross motion graphics and otaku culture? That’s right, another MAD!

Just using manga material, promotional images and *extremely few* anime scenes, a few NicoNico users were brought together to create this third installment of the Hidamari Sketch motion graphic extravaganza. Needless to say, apart from the official Hidamari Sketch materials, everything is self-made, from the sprite movements all the way to the 3D modeling and effects.

5 days since its upload on NicoNicoDouga, it has gathered almost 115k hits and 12k+ mylist bookmarks (or favourites, in  YouTube-speak). I’m one of them of course, considering how much I love the show.

Here are the other two, in case you wanna see them: 1st collabo and 2nd collabo.

The third one came out just in time for Christmas and for the new 3rd season of Hidamari Sketch which is coming out next month. Can’t wait! We need to welcome the two new cute Hidamari Sou tenants with open arms.

Job Spots and Other Spots

ladybird01

Been busy with job-hunting lately. It was my first time writing a CV/resume in Japanese! Unlike the western approach where you can write and format your CV as you please, the Japanese prefer everyone to fight on equal ground and have you purchase a ready-formatted CV from 7-Eleven and fill up from there. Still, had to write everything in Japanese, so imagine the stress…

I so do love stress don’t I? If it’s not the Japanese exam, then I just hop on to the next pillar of stressful existence. Maybe I’m made to be the M type :P

Have a bunch of edited pictures for a whole lot of events ready, just no time to write the posts. Will do so in due time. Meanwhile enjoy pictures of a ladybug wandering around in my room a few minutes ago.

JLPT Lv1 had an Evangelion-related Question!

Apparently it’s true, as confirmed by those who took the test. Try to tackle the question. Uploaded by some gaijin who’s not supposed to do so lol.

Dunno whether it’s been done before, but to think that a popular anime like Eva was used in an official government exam brings tears of joy to my eyes. Though this excerpt was taken from its audio drama series, not the anime. At least from what I read.

I read there was a Dragon Quest-related question too. Will get back on that once it’s confirmed. EDIT: Confirmed by my classmates, there was also a Dragon Quest question in there. Cool!

Guess watching anime helps. It sure helped me a lot, at least! Damn, if I knew it were to come out I would’ve taken Level 1, grrr. I would at least get this one correct :)

For those who don’t wish to try, the English translation of the audio is available after the jump, courtesy of Kinny Riddle of figure.fm. more >>
